Road safety concerns rise in Cyprus amidst record motorcyclist fatalities and distracted driving

Since the beginning of 2026, Cyprus has recorded 27 road fatalities, a concerning figure that highlights persistent issues with traffic violations and general road safety. Data released by the police indicates that over 50% of these victims, specifically 14 individuals, were motorcyclists. This high rate of motorcycle-related deaths remains a primary focus of authorities, who attribute the trend to widespread failure to adhere to the highway code and a lack of risk awareness among drivers.

In response to the deteriorating safety situation, the police conducted a nationwide enforcement campaign between August 24 and August 30, 2026. The operation specifically targeted distracted driving, focusing on the use of mobile phones and other handheld objects while behind the wheel. During this one-week period, authorities issued 550 citations, comprising 520 reports for mobile phone usage and 30 for operating a vehicle while handling other items. These initiatives aim to curb the dangerous behaviors that threaten both the offenders and other road users.
