Remembering the 1974 assassination attempt on Vassos Lyssarides

On August 30, 1974, in Nicosia, Cyprus, a lethal attack targeted Vassos Lyssarides, the historic leader of the EDEK party. The politician was traveling in a car with Doros Loizou, the organizational secretary of the socialist youth movement EDEN, and Loizou’s wife, Varvara, when two gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons near the Canning Bridge. Doros Loizou was killed in the assault, while Vassos Lyssarides and Varvara Loizou survived the attack.

Journalist Kostas Venizelos recently brought public attention to previously unpublished conversations he held with Lyssarides in 2014 regarding the event. These discussions offered insight into the politician's perspective on the violence perpetrated by junta-aligned groups, specifically EOKA B, which operated under external orders during a period of extreme political instability following the events of 1974. The attack remains a significant historical incident, as those responsible were never apprehended or held accountable for the assassination.

The case remains officially open, serving as a reminder of the era's unresolved political crimes.
