Christodoulides-Erhürman meeting postponed following deadly shipwreck

The scheduled meeting between President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, originally set for September 2, has been postponed to September 9 at 10:30 a.m. The Turkish Cypriot side requested the delay following a tragic shipwreck off the coast of occupied Kyrenia on August 30. The vessel, a catamaran named Filo Jet, was traveling to Taşucu, Turkey, when it capsized and sank at a depth of 514 meters, carrying 267 people on board. Current reports indicate at least eight fatalities, with search efforts ongoing for 18 missing individuals.

In addition to the leaders' meeting, a scheduled discussion between Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and the representative of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Dana, was also postponed. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis expressed condolences for the victims of the shipwreck and a separate recent tragedy at Cavo Greco. He confirmed that the Republic of Cyprus has offered assistance for search and rescue operations via UNFICYP and the relevant bicommunal committee. A three-day mourning period has been declared in the occupied areas from August 31 to September 2.
