Meeting between Christodoulides and Erhürman postponed following shipwreck

The meeting between Republic of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, originally scheduled for September 2, 2026, has been postponed. The decision follows a request from the Turkish Cypriot side due to a tragic shipwreck off the coast of occupied Kyrenia on August 30, which resulted in at least eight deaths and left 18 people missing. A three-day period of mourning has been declared in the occupied territories.

The vessel involved, the catamaran Filo Jet, was carrying 267 people—259 passengers and eight crew—when it capsized four nautical miles off the coast and sank. A preparatory meeting between the negotiators for both sides was also cancelled as a consequence of the tragedy. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis expressed grief for both this event and a separate incident at Cavo Greco, reiterating that the Republic of Cyprus had offered to assist in rescue operations through UNFICYP. The negotiators are expected to communicate in the coming days to reschedule the leadership meeting.
