Fatal shipwreck of Filo Jet ferry off Kyrenia

On Sunday, August 30, 2026, the high-speed passenger catamaran Filo Jet capsized off the coast of Kyrenia while en route to Tasucu in Mersin, Turkey. The incident resulted in the deaths of eight people, with 18 passengers still reported missing. According to official reports, 267 people were on board at the time of the accident. Local authorities confirmed that 239 survivors have been rescued, while search and rescue operations are ongoing at a depth of 500 meters.

Nine individuals, including the captain, seven crew members, and a company official, have been detained and brought before the Kyrenia District Court on charges of negligence causing death. Police are currently investigating seven additional suspects, including company shareholders and harbor officials. Port authorities in Kyrenia have been suspended for granting sailing permission during adverse weather conditions. The Turkish navy vessel TCG Isin has been deployed to assist in the recovery of the vessel's black box and to aid in deep-sea search operations. Transport Minister Erhan Arikli has suspended all Filo Jet services while an investigation into technical failures and potential oversight continues.
