Greece rejects need for Turkish approval on Cyprus-Greece electricity link

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis stated on August 31, 2026, that Greece will not seek Turkey's approval to proceed with the Cyprus-Greece electricity interconnection project. Speaking to Parapolitika FM, Gerapetritis emphasized that the project does not legally require Ankara's consent under international law and that no such request will be made.

While the exact timeline remains dependent on the contractor's planning, the minister estimated that construction work could resume within the coming months, likely before the end of 2026. Regarding potential geopolitical tensions, Gerapetritis affirmed that Greece is prepared for all scenarios, ranging from diplomatic challenges to more intense confrontations. He noted that while the government is not currently concerned, it maintains a heightened state of alertness regarding the project's development and security.

The initiative aims to link the power grids of Cyprus and Greece, despite historical friction regarding maritime boundaries and regional energy claims. The Greek government maintains its position that the legal basis for the project is firm and does not necessitate engagement with the Turkish government.
