Ongoing rescue efforts follow passenger ship sinking off Kyrenia

Rescue operations entered their fourth day off the coast of Kyrenia following the sinking of the Filo Jet passenger catamaran, which was traveling to Tasucu, Turkey. While authorities confirmed eight fatalities, approximately 20 people remain missing, with search teams utilizing aircraft, drones, and naval vessels to scan the area. Turkish and Turkish Cypriot authorities have confirmed that the sunken vessel has been located at a depth of 550 meters by the TCG Isin, with the specialized rescue ship TCG Alemdar now arriving to assist in underwater operations.

Local reports highlight potential discrepancies in official passenger manifests, as some survivors claimed to have recovered bodies not listed among the confirmed victims. Tufan Erhurman, the Turkish Cypriot leader, has pledged a full investigation into the tragedy, which occurred amid reports of pre-existing mechanical concerns regarding the ship's condition. While the Republic of Cyprus offered assistance through the United Nations and relevant bicommunal committees, these offers were not accepted by the Turkish Cypriot authorities. The focus remains on retrieving remains and recovering the ship's "black box" to determine the exact cause of the disaster.
