Cyprus celebrates the 31st anniversary of the arrival of the internet

On August 31, 1995, Cyprus reached a historical milestone as internet technology was presented to the public for the first time. The service became officially available to the general public the following day, marking the island's entry into the digital age at a time when such technology was still perceived by many as science fiction.

Christodoulos Protopapas, a central figure in the introduction of this technology to the country, noted that the initiative faced significant resistance from the local establishment. Critics at the time argued that the introduction of the internet could potentially bankrupt the state telecommunications provider, CYTA, or compromise the stability of vital communication networks.

Thirty-one years later, the internet has become an essential component of daily life in Cyprus, profoundly transforming how citizens communicate and access information.
