Justice minister proposes maritime legal reforms following fatal Cavo Greco accident

Following the death of businessman Dimis Mavropoulos, who lost his life when his boat struck rocks near Cavo Greco during a storm, Cyprus Justice Minister Costas Fytiris has proposed significant changes to maritime safety regulations. The minister noted that current legislation does not grant authorities the power to legally prevent vessels from departing during hazardous weather conditions, a gap he intends to address through new parliamentary bills.

Beyond departure restrictions, Fytiris emphasized the need to regulate designated anchorage areas. Current rules allow boats to anchor for extended periods, including overnight stays in locations that may become life-threatening during severe weather. The minister stressed that these practices need tighter control to prevent future accidents.

While pushing for legislative action, the minister acknowledged the complexity of the matter. He cautioned that any new measures must be implemented carefully to avoid negatively impacting tourism, leisure boating, and the local fishing industry. The government is now seeking a balanced legislative approach to ensure safety without imposing excessive blanket restrictions on maritime activities.
