Nicosia district authority addresses infrastructure failures following severe weather

On Saturday, August 30, 2026, severe weather conditions caused significant flooding in the Nicosia district, specifically affecting the Engomi, Archangelos, and Pedieos regions. Constantinos Yiorkatzis, President of the Nicosia District Organization (EOA), stated that the floods were primarily caused by structural deficiencies and a lack of adequate infrastructure.

During his briefing, Yiorkatzis highlighted critical failures in the existing stormwater management system, noting that modern roads like 28th October Street continue to flood due to the absence of a comprehensive drainage network. Furthermore, he addressed the incomplete status of two designated retention basins meant to alleviate such pressure. The EOA has established a dedicated department for the cleaning and maintenance of stormwater pipelines, which operates continuously throughout the year.

While the EOA is currently conducting investigations and feasibility studies to rectify these issues, officials have warned that immediate solutions are unlikely. Addressing the root causes will require the construction of large-scale, long-term infrastructure projects, which the organization is currently in the process of evaluating.
