Cyprus records record-breaking rainfall in August

Cyprus experienced an exceptionally rainy August, with rainfall levels reaching 30 millimetres, more than ten times the normal monthly average of 2.9 millimetres. According to the Department of Meteorology, this 1,034% increase was heavily concentrated at the end of the month, with 22.5 millimetres falling during the final three days.

The highest rainfall volume was measured in Platania at 83.9 millimetres, representing a 655% increase over the norm. Significant percentage spikes were observed in Frenaros and Xylotymbou, where rainfall was over 200 times higher than typical levels, reaching 27,300% and 20,000% of the normal averages, respectively. Larnaca Airport also saw substantial rain, recording over 40 times its expected monthly total.

While most stations across the island exceeded their normal rainfall levels, exceptions included Pano Panayia, which reported no rain, and Paphos Airport, which recorded exactly the normal seasonal level of 0.2 millimetres. Data for the period from October 1, 2025, to the end of August 2026 shows that cumulative rainfall has reached 122% of the normal for that timeframe.
