Record rainfall recorded in Cyprus during August

Cyprus experienced exceptionally high rainfall in August 2026, with levels reaching more than ten times the monthly average, according to the Department of Meteorology. Preliminary data released on Monday, August 31, indicates that average rainfall in government-controlled areas reached 30 millimetres, compared to a typical average of 2.9 millimetres, representing a 1,034% increase. A significant portion of this precipitation, specifically 22.5 millimetres, occurred during the final three days of the month.

The highest volume of rainfall was documented in Platania, where 83.9 millimetres were recorded, marking a 655% increase over the monthly norm. Extreme percentage spikes were noted in Frenaros and Xylotymbou, where totals exceeded normal averages by over 200 times, reaching 27,300% and 20,000% respectively. Other areas, including Larnaca Airport and Gefyri Panagias, also reported rainfall levels significantly above normal. Conversely, the Pano Panagia region remained dry, recording no rainfall throughout the period.
