Fatal shipwreck off the coast of Kyrenia leads to travel crisis and price gouging

A maritime tragedy occurred on the morning of Sunday, August 30, 2026, off the coast of Kyrenia, resulting in eight confirmed deaths and twenty individuals reported missing. In the wake of the suspension of sea routes, local political groups and youth organizations have reported significant price gouging by airlines operating from the Ercan airport. Reports indicate that ticket prices to Turkey have surged, with some carriers increasing costs from 6,000 to 22,000 Turkish lira within a twenty-four-hour period. Authorities are currently exploring ways to modify shipping routes to avoid the search area while allowing unaffected ferry companies to resume operations.
