Greece deploys forest firefighting unit to Cyprus

A 21-member team from the Greek Special Unit for Forest Operations (EMODE) has arrived in Cyprus as part of the European Union's Prepositioning 2026 program. This initiative marks the first time Cyprus has served as a host nation for foreign firefighting forces under this specific EU framework. The unit will remain on operational alert in the country from September 1st through September 15th to provide immediate assistance in the event of forest fires during the period of high seasonal risk.

The mission is operationally coordinated by the Cypriot Department of Forests, with logistical support provided jointly by the Department of Forests and the Civil Defence. Prior to their deployment, the Greek firefighters are undergoing an orientation program designed to familiarize them with local firefighting protocols, alert systems, forest topography, and critical fire-protection infrastructure. The EU pre-deployment program has been in operation since 2022, aiming to bolster the collective ability of member states to respond effectively to wildfires by strategically positioning assets in high-risk zones.
