Cyprus Electricity Market Association warns of grid vulnerability

The Cyprus Electricity Market Association issued a warning on September 1, 2026, regarding the precarious state of the national electricity system. The association emphasized that current power supply levels are only maintained if all production units operate without failures, leaving little room for error. Officials cited a combination of rising energy demand, aging power plants, the high energy consumption of desalination units, and significant delays in completing critical energy projects as the primary drivers of this instability.

The association noted that rolling blackouts, such as those implemented on July 22, 2026, should not be viewed as a standard operational procedure but rather as an emergency measure to prevent a total systemic blackout. To mitigate these risks, the group is calling for urgent political action, faster licensing processes, and stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors. Furthermore, the association highlighted that a completed private power generation investment remains offline and unavailable to provide much-needed capacity to the grid.
