Escalation of military conflict between the United States and Iran

Tensions in the Middle East escalated significantly this week as the United States and Iran engaged in their most intense exchange of fire since July. Following U.S. strikes on Larak Island, which Washington described as a response to Iranian mine-laying near the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. Central Command launched a major wave of airstrikes against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Tuesday. These strikes targeted air defense facilities, radar systems, naval assets, and communication sites along Iran’s southern coast.

In retaliation, Iran conducted a series of attacks using drones and ballistic missiles against U.S. assets and interests in Jordan, Iraq, Bahrain, and Kuwait. While the IRGC claimed to have inflicted significant U.S. casualties, American officials reported no injuries. Jordan’s military confirmed intercepting 10 of 13 ballistic missiles targeting its territory. Iran also alleged that U.S. strikes resulted in five civilian deaths at a wedding, a claim not independently verified. President Donald Trump warned of further strikes if Tehran continues its aggression, though he downplayed the prospect of full-scale war. The renewed conflict has unsettled global financial markets, contributing to a rise in oil prices and economic volatility.
