Rare footage captures Cyprus mouflon behavior at waterholes

Surveillance cameras operated by the Cyprus Game and Fauna Service recently captured rare wildlife footage in Cyprus, documenting the behavior of mouflons at local waterholes. In one instance, a mature male mouflon was filmed drinking water while a fox approached cautiously. According to Senior Service Officer Nikos Kasinis, the animal remained undisturbed because foxes do not pose a threat to healthy, mature mouflons.

In a separate, notable recording also released by Kasinis, a group of seven mouflons was seen congregating to drink. Among them was a female accompanied by twins—one male and one female. Kasinis noted that twin births in the Cypriot mouflon population are rare, occurring in less than 10% of cases. Furthermore, the survival rate for these twins during their first year of life is also significantly low, falling below the 10% threshold. These observations provide valuable insights into the status and reproductive challenges of the species within the local ecosystem.
