Revelation of 1974 prisoner rape shared in Cypriot Parliament

During a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees held on September 1, 2026, the President of the Association of Prisoners of War 1974, Vasos Christou, disclosed a traumatic testimony involving a Cypriot prisoner who was raped during the 1974 Turkish invasion. The revelation was made to Christou by the late prisoner's widow, who explained that her husband had confessed the ordeal only shortly before his death, having kept the secret for decades despite them raising four children together. The widow chose to share this account with the authorities to alleviate the burden she had been carrying and to honor her late husband's memory.

Following this testimony, Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Tina Pavlou announced that the government is considering the creation of a registry for both men and women who suffered abuse during the 1974 invasion. Christou emphasized that this case is likely not isolated, noting that other survivors remain silent due to the trauma and the social stigma associated with such abuse. He raised concerns regarding how these individuals can be encouraged to come forward to seek official recognition and support.
