Revelation of 1974 wartime sexual violence emerges in Cypriot Parliament

A harrowing account of wartime sexual violence was presented to the Cypriot Parliamentary Committee on Refugees on September 1, 2026. Vasos Christou, president of the Association of Prisoners of War 1974, testified that a former prisoner of war disclosed on his deathbed that he had been raped by Turkish forces during the 1974 conflict. The victim had kept this trauma secret for over five decades, despite raising four children with his wife. The wife, seeking to unburden herself and provide peace to her late husband’s memory, shared the details with Christou.

Christou noted that this is likely not an isolated incident, emphasizing that many survivors remain silent due to the social stigma and personal trauma surrounding these acts. In response to these revelations and broader concerns regarding wartime abuses, Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Tina Pavlou announced that the government is in the process of establishing an official registry for both men and women who suffered abuse during the 1974 Turkish invasion. This database is intended to formally document these experiences and facilitate support for victims, marking a significant step in addressing a long-overlooked chapter of the conflict.
