Greece issues counter-NAVTEX following Turkish research vessel deployment near Kastellorizo

On September 1, 2026, tensions escalated in the Eastern Mediterranean after Turkey issued a maritime directive (NAVTEX 0862/26) designating an area southwest of Kastellorizo for scientific research. The Turkish research vessel R/V TUBITAK MARMARA is scheduled to operate in the region until September 15. The designated zone reportedly overlaps with areas the Turkish government recently associated with its self-declared marine park in the Eastern Mediterranean.

In immediate response, Greece issued a counter-NAVTEX through the Hellenic Navy's Hydrographic Service station in Heraklion. Athens stated that the Turkish directive is illegal because it designates a station without authorization to broadcast in that area. Furthermore, Greece claims that part of the research area lies directly on the Greek continental shelf and falls within the exclusive NAVTEX service region managed by the Heraklion station. No further diplomatic or operational developments have been announced at this time.
