Death toll from floods in Nepal and Tibet surpasses 1,000

Severe flooding and landslides struck the border region between Nepal and Tibet last Wednesday, resulting in a significant loss of life. According to current provisional data from the Nepal Emergency Management Authority and Chinese state media, the disaster has claimed at least 1,066 lives, with 4,562 individuals still reported missing. Of the total missing, 592 are identified as foreign nationals.

The catastrophe has caused extensive damage to critical infrastructure, specifically impacting eleven hydroelectric plants along the Trishuli River. Rescue teams are currently engaged in a high-stakes operation to locate approximately 600 workers trapped within submerged tunnels at these facilities. While authorities in Nepal report 1,050 deaths and 3,916 missing, reports from the Tibet side indicate 16 confirmed deaths and 546 missing persons. Ongoing search and recovery operations remain the priority as rescue crews attempt to reach those stranded in the affected industrial zones.
