Devastating floods and landslides impact Nepal and Tibet

A glacier collapse in the Himalayas last week triggered catastrophic flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-Tibet border, resulting in a rapidly rising death toll. According to the latest reports as of September 2, the death toll has reached at least 1,225 people, with 1,204 fatalities in Nepal and 21 in Tibet. Additionally, 4,757 individuals remain missing, including 400 pilgrims and 105 Indian tourists.

Rescue operations are currently focused on hydroelectric power facilities, particularly the Trishuli river projects, where workers remain trapped in tunnels. While 279 people have been rescued from various construction sites, at least 639 workers are still unaccounted for. International rescue teams from India, China, and the United States have joined local efforts.

Authorities, including Nepal's National Emergency Operation Center, have warned that hopes of finding further survivors are fading one week after the disaster. Prime Minister Balendra Shah has indicated that government efforts are shifting toward recovery and reconstruction, even as search operations continue in difficult terrain.
