OELMEK reports school staffing and infrastructure issues as teachers return

As secondary school teachers returned to work on September 1, 2026, the President of the OELMEK trade union, Konstantinos Konstantinou, reported ongoing logistical and infrastructure issues. He emphasized that while administrative teams began preparations last week, many recurring problems remain unresolved despite being expected to be addressed annually before the academic year starts.

A primary concern raised by the Association of Directors and highlighted by OELMEK is the significant understaffing of school secretariats. The union is currently coordinating with the Directorate of Secondary Education to identify and document these vacancies. This data will be forwarded to the Educational Service Commission (EEY) with the goal of ensuring full staffing before students return to classes next Monday.
