Marios Georgiou wins gold in all-around gymnastics at Mediterranean Games

Cypriot gymnast Marios Georgiou secured the gold medal in the men's artistic gymnastics all-around final at the 20th Mediterranean Games held in Taranto, Italy, on September 1, 2026. The athlete achieved a winning score of 80.450, marking a significant milestone in his career and for the Cypriot national team.

This victory holds immense historical significance, as it makes Georgiou the most decorated Cypriot athlete in the history of the Mediterranean Games with a total of seven medals. Furthermore, he is the first Cypriot to claim four gold medals in the competition and has achieved the feat of winning gold in three consecutive Games, equalling a record set by Eleni Artymata. The triumph contributed to a historic performance for the Cyprus delegation, which reached a record-breaking 14 total medals and six golds during the Taranto event.

Following the ceremony, where the Cypriot national anthem was played in his honor, Georgiou expressed pride in his achievement and gratitude toward his support team. The Cyprus Olympic Committee issued a formal statement of congratulations, highlighting his consistent performance at the highest level of competitive gymnastics.
