UN Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin to hold meetings in New York on Cyprus issue

The Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, is visiting New York this week to hold consultations with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regarding the ongoing Cyprus issue. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric confirmed the visit, noting that Holguin’s continued engagement demonstrates the United Nations' persistent involvement in facilitating a resolution.

Dujarric emphasized that the organization is actively working with both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leadership. Regarding the possibility of convening a new "5+1" format meeting, the spokesperson stated that such an event requires careful preparation and "serious discussions" beforehand to ensure progress. He noted that the UN remains committed to facilitating dialogue between the two sides.

This development follows previous diplomatic efforts led by Holguin to bridge the divide between the island's communities. While the UN continues its mediation efforts, no specific timeline for a new summit has been established, as the focus remains on building the necessary groundwork for future negotiations.
