United Nations warns of rising flood risks in the Himalayas

A catastrophic glacial flood in Nepal, triggered by a glacier collapse last week, has resulted in over 1,000 fatalities. Following this tragedy, Kanni Wignaraja, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, warned that the Himalayan region faces an escalating threat of future glacial lake outburst floods. Experts emphasize that the risks extend beyond Nepal to include China and India, threatening millions of inhabitants along major river systems and jeopardizing critical hydroelectric infrastructure.

Data from 2020 identified 47 potentially dangerous glacial lakes in these countries, but officials estimate the current figure is significantly higher. Wignaraja noted that current technology is insufficient to mitigate the impact of such widespread flooding on riverine communities. The UN emphasizes that the region remains largely unprepared for the increasing frequency of these disasters, with millions of lives currently at risk due to the instability of high-altitude glacial landscapes.
