Two commercial ships collide in the Sea of Marmara

Two Turkish-flagged commercial vessels, the cargo ship Tugberk Imamoglu and the tanker Alsu, collided in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2, 2026. The incident occurred at approximately 03:15 local time, 18 nautical miles south of Silivri in the Sea of Marmara. The Alsu, which was carrying 2,999 tons of lubricant oil, sustained no visible damage. In contrast, the Tugberk Imamoglu, carrying 4,199 tons of sheet metal, is believed to have sunk after a distress signal was received at 03:26 via the COSPAS-SARSAT system.

Authorities have lost contact with all 10 crew members of the Tugberk Imamoglu. Rescue teams discovered unoccupied life-saving equipment, including a free-fall lifeboat, floating at the scene. The Turkish General Directorate of Maritime Affairs confirmed that the vessel is presumed sunk as emergency responders continue intensive search and rescue operations involving coastguard vessels and helicopters. The investigation into the circumstances of the collision remains ongoing as maritime traffic authorities manage the situation in the area.
