Fatal accident on Limassol-Paphos motorway claims life of 76-year-old man

A 76-year-old man, identified as Dimitris Potamitis, was killed on September 2, 2026, in a tragic road accident on the Limassol-Paphos motorway near the Episkopi exit, within the jurisdiction of the British Bases. The incident occurred around 11:00 am when a refrigerator being transported in the victim's double-cab vehicle fell onto the road. Potamitis exited his vehicle to retrieve the appliance and was struck by a passing minibus carrying passengers to Paphos airport.

The collision also involved the victim's vehicle, which had been left stopped on the motorway. While Potamitis was pronounced dead at the scene, his grandson, who was a passenger in the truck, remained unharmed. The driver of the minibus was arrested and underwent alcohol and drug testing as part of the ongoing investigation conducted by the British Bases Police, who are currently seeking dashcam footage and eyewitness accounts.

The motorway was closed for several hours to facilitate on-site examinations, causing significant traffic disruption with vehicles diverted to the old Limassol-Paphos road via Kantou and Erimi exits. The road was reopened to traffic by approximately 16:30. This event follows another serious motorcycle accident in Limassol earlier the same morning, where a 19-year-old was hospitalized with multiple fractures.
