Annual memorial service held for Alekos Michaelides

The annual memorial service for Alekos Michaelides, the former President of the House of Representatives and Minister of Foreign Affairs, was held on September 2, 2026, in the mountain village of Milikouri. The current Minister of Foreign Affairs, Constantinos Kombos, attended the event to honor the late statesman's multifaceted career and contributions to the Republic of Cyprus.

Born in 1933 in Milikouri, Michaelides initially worked as an educator before transitioning into business. Following the 1974 Turkish invasion, which disrupted his professional life in Famagusta, he successfully rebuilt his career and later entered politics, being elected to office in 1976. Minister Kombos described him as a visionary, diligent, and demanding individual who placed a high value on education, frequently emphasizing that knowledge is an asset that cannot be taken away.
