Discovery of the Genesis Rock during Apollo 15 mission
On August 1, 1971, astronauts David Scott and James Irwin discovered a rare, white rock fragment while exploring the Hadley–Apennine region of the Moon during the Apollo 15 mission. The specimen, famously known as the 'Genesis Rock', was found near the Spur crater on the slope of the Hadley Delta. Its distinctively bright, coarse-grained appearance indicated it was anorthosite, a type of rock rich in plagioclase mineral.
The discovery holds significant scientific importance as the sample is estimated to be approximately 4 billion years old. This age provides researchers with vital information regarding the formation and evolution of the ancient lunar crust.
