EAC discovers illegal solar installations in nationwide campaign

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has launched a comprehensive nationwide campaign since early June 2026 to identify unauthorized photovoltaic systems and illegal network extensions. Using smart meter data, satellite imagery, and proprietary software, the utility has prioritized large commercial clients, including factories, hotels, stadiums, and shops.

Following 77 on-site inspections, officials confirmed 22 cases of illegal connections or unauthorized capacity expansions. In 17 of these instances, the operators had failed to submit any formal applications for installation. The identified systems were immediately disconnected from the grid. Additionally, inspectors discovered two illegal energy storage units. EAC spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou stated that these unauthorized operations unfairly increase power curtailment for compliant system owners and present significant safety hazards.

The investigation remains ongoing, with 110 additional suspicious installations currently under review. The authorities aim to continue the inspections to ensure grid stability and equitable treatment for all energy producers across the country.
