Cyprus petrol pricing data sparks political debate

As of September 2, 2026, Cyprus ranks 22nd among 27 European Union member states regarding the cost of unleaded petrol, placing it among the cheaper markets in the bloc. According to the European Commission's Weekly Oil Bulletin, the average price for 95-octane unleaded petrol is approximately €1.595 per litre, with recent market data showing a range between €1.535 and €1.669 per litre. Filling a 50-litre tank currently costs between €76.75 and €80.35.

Political tension arose following comments by Finance Minister Makis Keravnos, who claimed that Cyprus maintains the lowest petrol prices in the EU after Bulgaria. This assertion prompted sharp criticism from the AKEL party, which accused the government of being disconnected from the economic realities faced by citizens dealing with inflation and rising fuel costs. While the statistical ranking indicates Cyprus is relatively competitive compared to the European average, the disparity between official statements and public perception remains a point of contention.
