Ministry of Education support program staff announce protest march to the Presidential Palace

On Thursday, September 3, 2026, employees of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth support programs will stage a protest march in Nicosia. Participants are scheduled to gather at 09:30 at the PASYDY building before marching toward the Presidential Palace. The police have announced that this demonstration will cause temporary traffic disruptions along the route and in the vicinity of the Presidential Palace, advising the public to avoid the area and comply with officer instructions.

The protest follows a decision made during a General Assembly held on September 1, 2026, where employees rejected a proposal from Education Minister Athena Michaelidou. Negotiations held on August 31 failed to resolve key grievances, specifically concerning unemployment benefits and the formal announcement of job vacancies. Trade unions PASEY-PEO and OEKDY-SEK report that staff have been without income for three months and are dissatisfied with the progress regarding legal reviews of benefit eligibility.

While the Minister pledged to refer the language concerning unemployment benefits to the Law Office for re-evaluation, the unions have confirmed they will proceed with the mobilization to demand immediate solutions. Authorities will remain in the area to manage traffic and ensure safety during the event.
