Ukraine and Germany advance drone and defense cooperation deal

On September 2, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine is nearing the finalization of a comprehensive defense agreement with Germany following a phone call with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The agreement, which was initially proposed by Kyiv several months ago, focuses on the joint development of various types of drones, missiles, and associated software, aiming to bolster the defense capabilities of both nations.

In addition to the collaborative agreement, Germany is preparing further military support for Ukraine. Furthermore, the delivery of several thousand strike drones is expected in the near future. Technical teams from both countries are currently in the process of finalizing the text of the agreement to formalize these commitments. The deal is framed by both governments as a strategic step to enhance collective defensive posture through technological and industrial partnership.
