CCTV systems reduce vandalism in Cyprus schools

Education Minister Athena Michailidou announced a significant reduction in vandalism and delinquent behavior in schools following the installation of CCTV systems. During a meeting with the House Education Committee on September 2, 2026, the Minister noted that the initiative successfully deterred damage that previously occurred during afternoon and evening hours.

Currently, CCTV systems are operational in 102 schools across Cyprus, with plans to expand the installation to an additional 73 units. While cameras are a key component of the Ministry's security strategy, the Minister emphasized that they are part of a broader approach, which includes the introduction of school counselors and a pilot program placing social workers in selected schools. Regarding infrastructure, the Ministry is continuing the installation of air conditioning units, though this process is facing delays due to electrical upgrade requirements and procurement challenges.
