EU and NATO address alleged Russian sabotage attempt in Leipzig

On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met in Brussels to condemn an attempted attack at the Leipzig airport, which they identified as a military-grade operation conducted by Russian agents on EU soil. Both leaders characterized the incident as a significant escalation and part of a broader, reckless pattern of Russian interference in European infrastructure and airspace, marking what they termed a 'new normal' of security threats.

In response to these developments and escalating Russian attacks, Ukraine has formally requested that a portion of its 90 billion euro loan be reallocated toward the purchase of American PAC-3 Patriot air defense systems. Von der Leyen noted that the member states are currently evaluating this request, stating that the process is moving in the right direction. Additionally, the European Commission has received a new payment request covering advanced air defense systems and European-made fighter jets. The EU is also working on a joint anti-ballistic defense program with Kyiv and an overarching defense investment plan to reinforce the security of member states against such threats.
