DISY leader proposes ten-year plan for compensation of bank depositors and bondholders

On September 2, 2026, the leader of the Democratic Rally (DISY) party, Annita Demetriou, met with representatives of the Association of Bank Bondholders (SYKATA) and the Association of Laiki Bank Depositors (SYKALA) at the party's headquarters in Nicosia. During the discussion, Demetriou reiterated her party's pre-election commitment to address the financial losses suffered by these groups by providing annual compensation payments over a maximum period of ten years. She characterized the past losses as an injustice resulting from erroneous economic policies that must be rectified through the Solidarity Fund.

Demetriou emphasized that the implementation of this payment plan is conditional upon maintaining national economic stability and adopting growth-oriented policies that increase state revenues. Furthermore, the meeting addressed the burden of legal costs currently facing individuals who had previously initiated and subsequently withdrawn lawsuits. The DISY leader pledged that the party will formally register this issue with the Parliamentary Committee on Finance to facilitate a discussion involving all affected stakeholders.

The leaders of the associations, Stavros Giallourides and Adonis Papakonstantinou, described the meeting as productive. The proposal now moves to the parliamentary level for further deliberation.
