Maritime disaster off Kyrenia leads to political fallout and dismissals

A catastrophic shipwreck involving the catamaran 'Filo Jet' occurred on August 30, 2026, off the coast of Kyrenia in the occupied areas of Cyprus. As of September 4, the death toll has reached 12, with 16 people still missing. The vessel lies at a depth of approximately 550 meters, complicating ongoing rescue operations conducted by Turkish vessels equipped with advanced underwater retrieval capabilities.

In response to the tragedy and mounting public pressure, 'Prime Minister' Unal Ustel dismissed the 'Minister of Public Works and Transport', Erhan Arikli. The political fallout included the resignation of the YDP party from the government.
