Thirteen dead following Filo Jet shipwreck off Kyrenia

On August 30, the passenger catamaran Filo Jet sank off the coast of occupied Kyrenia while en route to Taşucu, Turkey. The vessel was carrying 267 individuals, consisting of 259 passengers and 8 crew members. As of September 6, rescue operations have confirmed the deaths of 13 people, while 15 individuals remain missing. Most of the 239 survivors have been discharged from medical care, with only one individual still hospitalized. Turkish military vessels, including the TCG Isin and TCG Alemdar, are leading the search operations at a depth of 554 meters using remotely operated vehicles.

The maritime tragedy has triggered significant political fallout, resulting in the removal of the administration's transport minister, Erhan Arikli, along with several high-ranking ministry and port officials. The Rebirth Party, led by Arikli, has withdrawn from the governing coalition, creating political instability. Meanwhile, authorities are exploring salvage options for the wreck and attempting to recover the flight data recorder. The legal community in the area has offered free legal support to the victims' families as the investigation into the cause of the disaster continues.
