Department of Forestry tests new biodegradable fire retardant

The Department of Forestry has initiated a pilot test of a new biodegradable fire retardant designed for both the prevention and suppression of forest fires. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, this environmentally friendly chemical is applied to dry vegetation to create a protective barrier against potential flames. The substance remains effective for several months provided there is no rainfall.

In the event of a wildfire, the product acts as a fire retardant to interrupt the spread of fire. Officials state that it can also be used directly on active fire fronts, demonstrating superior extinguishing performance compared to water. Moving forward, the Department of Forestry will conduct a formal analysis and evaluation of the trial results to determine how to integrate this technology into existing national fire prevention and suppression systems.
