Turkish opposition official caught on video in domestic abuse case
A security camera video released on September 4, 2026, has sparked significant controversy in Turkey, appearing to show Berhan Simsek, vice president of the Republican People's Party (CHP), physically abusing his former partner, Ozlem Sanver. The footage, reportedly recorded in 2021, shows Simsek kicking Sanver and forcibly dragging her into a residence while she pleads for him to let her go.
Ozlem Sanver filed a formal complaint against the politician in April 2026, detailing years of physical violence, threats, psychological abuse, and confinement during their ten-year relationship. Forensic medical examinations have reportedly supported her claims. In response to the allegations, a court previously issued a temporary order prohibiting Simsek from approaching Sanver for a period of two months. The resurfacing of this video has reignited public and political debate regarding domestic violence and the conduct of public officials as the legal proceedings continue.
