Severe weather disrupts traffic across Nicosia and mountain regions

On Friday afternoon, September 4, 2026, heavy rainfall and strong winds significantly affected traffic in the Nicosia district. The police issued an urgent advisory around 4:45 PM, highlighting hazardous conditions in Latsia, Pera Chorio Nisou, and Kotsiatis. Traffic flow was particularly disrupted on the Nicosia–Limassol motorway between the Latsia weighing station and Kotsiatis, where water accumulation and slippery road surfaces were reported. Authorities advised motorists to reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, and keep their headlights on.

By September 5, the weather-related risks expanded as heavy rainfall caused rockslides on the Saitas–Karvounas road. Drivers in these mountainous areas have been cautioned to exercise extreme vigilance. The Cyprus Department of Meteorology noted that while the region has been under the influence of seasonal low pressure and unstable air masses, conditions are expected to improve starting Sunday.
