Cyprus begins the 2026-2027 school year
On September 7, 2026, secondary education schools in Cyprus officially opened their doors for the new academic year. A total of 41,280 students have returned to 62 gymnasiums, 36 lyceums, 10 mixed high schools, and 5 evening schools, supported by approximately 7,200 teachers. Elementary students are scheduled to begin their classes on September 14, with 52,186 students enrolled, including 9,000 first-graders and 14,400 preschoolers.
Education Minister Athina Michailidou and President Nikos Christodoulides marked the commencement by emphasizing the importance of quality education, critical thinking, and the role of teachers as guides for the new generation. The government highlighted its ongoing commitment to modernizing the system, improving infrastructure, and promoting inclusive learning environments.
Despite the optimistic start, educational unions OELMEK and OLTEK have expressed concerns regarding ongoing reforms. Both organizations reported uncertainties related to the new teacher appointment system, warning that current staff may face job security issues. Union representatives stated that they expect an updated proposal from the Ministry of Education to address these concerns, noting that the true operational readiness of the schools will be determined in the coming days as the academic term proceeds.
