Cyprus schools prepare for the 2026-2027 academic year start

The 2026-2027 academic year begins on Monday for secondary education students in Cyprus, with 41,280 pupils expected to attend classes across 113 institutions. The infrastructure includes 62 gymnasiums, 36 lyceums, 10 six-grade schools, and 5 evening schools, supported by approximately 7,200 secondary education teachers and 890 staff in technical and vocational training.

Primary education remains on a different schedule, with teachers reporting on September 7 and students starting on September 14. Enrollment for primary education is set at 52,186 students, including 8,919 first-graders, while kindergartens will host 14,398 children. Preparations were finalized ahead of these dates to ensure a smooth transition into the new term.

Minister of Education Athena Michaelidou issued a message emphasizing the government's commitment to a safe and innovative learning environment. The focus remains on implementing reforms and addressing long-standing issues within the education system to better support the new generation's academic and personal goals.
