Nicosia launches major infrastructure project for Digeni Akrita Avenue culvert

The Nicosia District Government Organisation (EOA) has officially launched a critical infrastructure project to repair and reinforce a 50-year-old stormwater culvert situated beneath Digeni Akrita Avenue. The project, which covers the section of the culvert carrying the Kotsirkas river between the junctions of Kallipoleos and Larnakos avenues, was initiated due to significant structural corrosion and safety concerns regarding vehicle traffic on the road above.

The contract for the works, valued at €2,259,499 plus VAT, was awarded to C. Roushas Trading and Development Ltd. According to EOA chairman Constantinos Yiorkadjis, the project will be executed in phases over a 28-week period using modern reinforced concrete methods. Funding for the development is shared, with two-thirds provided by the state and the remaining third covered by the EOA using revenue from local stormwater fees.

This initiative follows the recent transfer of responsibility for stormwater management to the district organisation, which prioritised the site after assessing its deteriorating condition. The project aims to secure the safety of one of Nicosia's major arterial roads and prevent potential structural failures, with the EOA noting that it collects approximately €2 million annually from property owners to support such infrastructure maintenance efforts.
