Cyprus accelerates efforts for Schengen zone accession

The Republic of Cyprus has entered the final stage of its efforts to join the European Union’s Schengen Area. President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed on September 4, 2026, that the government is actively working to secure a political decision from member states to finalize the country's full integration, which remains a primary diplomatic priority for enhanced security and free movement.

This push follows a positive assessment from the European Commission, which recommended prioritizing Cyprus's request for accession. The Commission is expected to formally present its "State of Schengen" report to the Council of the European Union within the next two weeks. Final approval rests with the Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) council, and officials are currently coordinating with both the Commission and individual member states to ensure a favorable outcome as soon as possible.
