Human remains discovered in Marathon home following pension fraud investigation

Authorities in Marathon, Greece, have launched an investigation after the remains of an elderly woman were discovered wrapped in nylon and sheets in a storage area of her family home. Forensic anthropologists examined the site on September 4, 2026, and have transported the bones to a laboratory for further analysis. The woman’s daughter and grandson have been taken into police custody following the discovery.

The case emerged after the woman’s granddaughter reported to the Peristeri police station that her mother had buried the grandmother in the garden years ago. According to the suspect, the elderly woman died of natural causes approximately ten years ago, but the daughter concealed the death to continue collecting her mother’s pension. Reports indicate that a withdrawal from the victim's pension account was recorded as recently as August 2026. While the granddaughter reported the incident without explicitly alleging criminal violence, the daughter has confessed to the burial, citing extreme financial hardship and unemployment as the driving factors behind the concealment.
