Massive forest fires in Indonesia spark regional environmental crisis

Indonesia is currently battling massive forest fires that have persisted for weeks, primarily affecting the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. The resulting thick, toxic smog has significantly degraded air quality and reduced visibility to less than one kilometer in the West Kalimantan province, posing severe public health risks to the local population.

To combat the flames, the National Disaster Management Agency has deployed over 14,000 firefighters. According to agency spokesperson Burton Suar Pelita Panjaitan, these teams have already successfully extinguished fires covering approximately 4,300 hectares of land. Despite these efforts, the environmental crisis continues as the dense smoke drifts across national borders, affecting neighboring Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines.

This ongoing disaster follows a period of escalating fire risks in the archipelago. Authorities remain engaged in intensive containment operations to mitigate the health impact and protect the affected regions from further ecological damage.
