Minister of Labour presents pension reform plans to DIKO leadership

On Friday, September 4, 2026, the Cypriot Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Marinos Mousiouttas, met with the President of the Democratic Party (DIKO), Nicolas Papadopoulos, to outline the key provisions of the government's upcoming pension reform. Accompanied by ministry officials and an actuary, the Minister presented the framework to the party as part of a broader consultation process with parliamentary groups.

During the meeting at DIKO headquarters, Papadopoulos emphasized that the primary goal of the reform must be to ensure adequate and dignified pension levels. He specifically advocated for a significant increase in the basic pension alongside proportional improvements for other categories. The party committed to reviewing the government proposals to contribute to a fairer and more sustainable system, with a particular focus on supporting low-income pensioners and the middle class.

Minister Mousiouttas subsequently confirmed that the reform is a government priority for 2026. He announced that the draft bill concerning the first pillar of the system—the Social Insurance Fund—is scheduled to be submitted to the House of Representatives later in September. The stated objectives include increasing all pensions while prioritizing those most in need to ensure long-term system stability and social equity.
