EDEK party members head to the polls to elect a new president

Members of the EDEK party are voting today, September 5, 2026, to elect a new president. The three remaining candidates in the race are Sofia Christodoulou Makri, Kyriakos (Koullis) Mavronikolas, and Giorgos Kouttoukis, following the withdrawal of Marios Hannidis, who has endorsed Mavronikolas. Voting is taking place across nine polling stations located in the five districts of Cyprus, including Pomos, as well as in Athens, Thessaloniki, and London. Polls are open from 9:30 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 17:30.

Approximately 8,000 members are eligible to vote, though turnout is estimated to reach around 2,000. To win, a candidate must secure more than 50% of the votes cast; if no candidate reaches this threshold, a runoff election will be required. The election follows a period of intense internal turmoil and the resignation of former president Nikos Anastasiou after the party failed to secure a seat in the May parliamentary elections for the first time in its history.

The winner of this election will serve in a transitional capacity until the party's elective congress scheduled for December. The new leadership's immediate task is to navigate the party through this difficult transition period and address the ongoing internal opposition.
